Gwenllian
herbal skincare products and the legend of Gwenllian-"Lady of the Lake"
Gwenllian herbal and aromatic products are hand made on the foothills of the
Black Mountains, in the Brecon Beacons, Carmarthenshire, using botanical, herbal
ingredients that have been used in natural skincare products for centuries. Why
did we choose the name Gwenllian for our products?
We were inspired by the well known legend of Gwenllian-"The Lady of the Lake"
The Legend of The Lady Of The Lake
Near the end of the twelfth century, there lived at Blaensawdde, near
Llanddeusant, Carmarthenshire a widow and her only son, who grazed their
livestock on the edge of a small lake called Llyn Y Fan Fach, surrounded by the
Black Mountains.
The son was sent by his mother to tend the cattle on the mountain. One day, to
his astonishment he saw, sitting on the unruffled surface of the water, the most
beautiful lady he had ever seen. In his bewilderment, he unconsciously offered
her the cheese and bread which he had with him. She politely refused, saying
"hard baked is thy bread, 'tis not easy o catch me", and immediately
disappeared
under the water.
The love-struck cow herd returned the following day with freshly baked bread.
Once again the beautiful lady appeared, but refused his bread saying, playfully
that it was too fresh. The following day, the cow-herd returned with bread baked
the previous evening by his mother. He waited all day until sunset before the
lady appeared. She accepted his bread, and consented to become his bride, on
condition that they would live together only until she received from him three
blows without a cause. He gladly agreed. Her name was Gwenllian.
Her father gave them a dowry of as many sheep, cattle, goats, and horses that
they could count ,which magically appeared from the depths of the lake.
They lived happily in prosperity for a few years, and three sons were born unto
them.
One day, they were invited to nearby christening. Gwenllian was reluctant to go,
feigning tiredness. Her husband slapped her playfully on the shoulder, coaxing
her to go. He had struck her the first time.
On another occasion, she, without apparent reason, burst into tears in a
wedding. Her embarrassed husband, gave her a slight tap on her arm in a
reprimanding manner. He had struck her the second time.
Years passed, and one day, they were invited to a funeral. The lady burst out
laughing. Her bewildered husband struck her slightly saying "hush, hush". The
third and final blow had been struck, and Gwenllian walked to the lake, followed
by the dowry of animals that had originally appeared out of the lake. On
reaching the lake they all disappeared under the surface without a trace.
The distraught husband and sons visited the lake daily, in the the hope of
seeing her, but all was in vain. However, one day, she appeared to her eldest
son, Rhiwallon, and gave him her unique knowledge of healing, using herbs and
plants, which she had brought from the underworld.
He was to keep these secrets within the family, and the brothers were to become
practising physicians, from which the famous Physicians of Myddfai were
descended. The descendants of this ancient family continued to practice medicine
in Wales until the middle of the nineteenth century.
